The most impressive handvac of the bunch in terms of technology and engineering, the Dyson DC31 feels like a power tool. It has a smaller, lighter motor with no carbon brushes, which means no carbon particle emissions.
The DC31 picked up all of the debris from bare floors, but left behind some dirt on our carpet. It did an average job of removing pet hair, too. But one big selling point is its power: The entire time the handvac is running, it operates at its peak power level for maximum cleaning. However, it has a relatively short battery runtime, about six minutes on high power and about 12 minutes on low power.
Our consumer testers said they'd certainly want this vacuum in their homes if money were no object, and we loved it enough to name it our runner-up among cordless handvacs.
